Jaclyn has always been deeply disturbed by the disparities in social and economic status among citizens in the Metropolitan Detroit area and has made it her mission to correct these inequalities. In 2005, she joined City Year, a national program where young adults actively serve their communities by mentoring, tutoring, and coordinating after school programs. A 2008 graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a Bachelor’s in Sociology, she was a peer facilitator for the University of Michigan’s Project Community course among many other service programs at the University.

"As a New Leaders fellow, I would love to continue to develop my skills in organizing for social justice and advocating for social change. "

- Jaclyn Jackson,
2008 New Leaders Fellow
What particular experience has contributed to your desire to work with a progressive organization and participate in the NLP? What do you hope to gain from participating?
In 2005, I joined an AmeriCorps called City Year. City Year in a national program where young adults actively serve their communities by mentoring, tutoring, and coordinating after school programs; engage with political and community leaders; and participate in biweekly large-scale community service projects. Since I have always had the desire to empower people through social change, I decided to take year off from college and immediately joined the City Year Detroit program site. As a City Year Detroit Corps Member, I witnessed first hand the vast disparities in the public education system and socioeconomic disparities reinforced by poor policy. At the same time, I also witnessed community leaders, citizens, non-profit organizations, corporations, and politicians collaborate to develop new initiatives to repair Detroit. While problems existed, I saw outstanding potential for a better Detroit. It was this vision of a better city that inspired me to develop a deeper sense of civic responsibility. I am determined to build a better Detroit and a better America in general. As a New Leaders fellow, I would love to continue to develop my skills in organizing for social justice and advocating for social change.
