"Visiting the schools in South Africa opened my eyes and caused to me assess our country’s educational system. I kept thinking about how the apartheid mentality has not only caused South Africa to limit the integrity of people, but also the United States."

- Ashley Anderson,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about reforming our public education system. I believe without reform, our educational system will create a group of ineffective individuals.

You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
All About Love by Bell Hooks. Her words help me center my thoughts on love and challenges me to make sure I am living up to my personal commitments,

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
My journey to South Africa with the International Youth Leadership Institute encouraged me to be thankful of my achievements whether it was personal or academic. My heart was full of compassion and understanding when I heard the timeless stories of South Africa’s fight for democracy. Visiting the schools in South Africa also opened my eyes and caused to me assess our country’s educational system. I kept thinking about how the apartheid mentality has not only caused South Africa to limit the integrity of people, but also the United States.
