2008 New Leaders Summer Interns

Yael Leibovitch

Yael Leibovitch

Hometown: New Paltz, NY

Age: 21

School: Vassar College

Interests: Interests: working with youth, writing, teaching, traveling, community activism

Internship: Planned Parenthood

As the youngest of three sisters and a female activist, Yael believes it is important to provide girls with the resources to positively shape their identity. Her experience as a tutor for first graders at Clinton Elementary School, an urban school in the city of Poughkeepsie and as a mentor and activities leader for inner city girls in Sistah Power!, only affirmed the critical role education plays in the lives of our nation’s children. During her time as co-facilitator in Otisville Prison Transitory Service Program, she gained the practical skills to plan both long and short term programming in an efficient fashion.

In addition, her effort as a community organizer for Planned Parenthood and Clean Water Action has expanded her ability to engage with people of all ages in a variety of learning environments. These hands on experiences, coupled with her extensive academic study of gender, race, and social justice at Vassar College, have opened her mind to powerful strategies to educate and empower the youth of America.

"From an early age I was provided with strong models of leadership that range from a green party mayor that endorsed gay marriages, to a father that is an active member of Amnesty International. "

- Yael Leibovitch,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I believe that all children and adolescents deserve a voice and a future. Though we live in a discrepant society, with some effort from all of us we can ensure a better tomorrow for the youth of today. I plan to dedicate most of my life to help improve the education system. In such a way I believe I can most effectively address the issues faced by at-risk youth though out the country.
You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
Album: Graceland, Paul Simon
Book: Roots, Alex Haley

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
I hope to meet other enthusiastic activists from across America. I am eager to build a community from this diverse pool of passionate, politically conscious individuals. I hope to build relationships that transcend this summer in D.C. to pervade my entire life. I look forward to the skills and knowledge I will gain concerning grassroots organizing and the process of empowerment. I believe that this experience will help me understand the many issues that we, as Americans, face today. Hopefully throughout this collaborative process we will develop new and innovative ways to advocate for social change.
