Ben Xiong is a rising sophomore at Brown University studying economics and political science. As vice-president of his high school Model UN club, he educated other students about contemporary international issues and trained them in research and debate techniques.
A resident of Tucson, Arizona, he has also been heavily influenced by the illegal immigration and border control debate. Ben is interested in helping create reform in our nation's broken healthcare system and in reducing income disparity. His dream job would be to someday work on a congressional staff to directly create progressive change. |

What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about making sure that the least fortunate members of our society do not get left behind.
You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
Wikipedia...all of it printed out should last me a while.
What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
In 2004, a ballot measure was introduced in Arizona that was designed to strip away legal protections and benefits from illegal immigrants. The measure, Proposition 200, required all state and local agencies to verify all applicants’ identities before providing services or benefits. I strongly opposed this measure, and canvassed on Election Day to try and stop it from getting passed. Sadly, the measure passed, and I’ve been able to see its effects firsthand. The CPL New Leaders Program will help me to become a leader that will ensure that laws like Proposition 200 can finally be defeated for good. |
