- Chioma Iwuoha,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about improving the dialogue amongst Lafayette students about confronting the segregation that exists between ethnic and social groups.

You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
Book: Autobiography of Malcom X
CD: Seeing Sounds, Tha Carter 3, Anything by Sade

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
During High School, I participated in a school-wide trip to Ghana, Benin and Togo. I had been to Africa, but never visited the Slave Castle in Cape Coast where the Africans were kept in the Slave Dungeons and escorted to the ships that would take them from their homeland to America through the Door of No Return. The trip to Africa helped me connect with my ancestors struggle to survive through inhumane conditions. This trip made me realize that my ancestors are in me. I am a leader, encouraging teens to speak up for what they believe in and inspiring my sisters daily. I am a writer acknowledging the contributions that others make throughout the community. I am a historian educating myself about others because I refuse to let the past repeat itself. Like my ancestors, I have overcome many of my struggles in spite of what others may think or say. The New Leaders Program will help me build on the attributes that I already acquire.
