Kimsey is an artist, poet, and freelance photojournalist. She is a staff writer and political columnist for an entertainment magazine in Wilmington, NC. As a volunteer for the Obama campaign, she organized a group of college-aged women, The Cape Fear Obama Girls, to volunteer for the campaign and participate in events like the SC Democratic Debate, using their youth and energy to attract media attention to the cause. A lifelong environmental activist, she began work in disaster relief after Hurricane Floyd devastated much of North Carolina’s coastal plane. At UNCW, she majored in Creative Writing and minored in English.

"I have always been driven to better the world we live in. I think that is what the progressive movement is about."

- Kimsey Parker,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about bringing progressive ideas into the forefront of the global discourse.

You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
I'd want a large blank notebook to journal about my wonderful island life. (And a few hundred pencils/pens)

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
I have been fighting for progressive causes my entire life. In elementary school, I organized a petition to end the use of Styrofoam in our cafeteria because of its negative environmental impact. I collected two hundred signatures from students and teachers. I have been volunteering on the coast since childhood and have seen first hand the impact of overdevelopment of wetlands, of illegal dumping of pollutants into our waterways. I have seen the populations of sea turtles, oysters, clams, and flounder diminish as coastal populations of people increase. I have worked in disaster situations where the environment and people collide like hurricanes and tornadoes. I organized efforts of both cleaning up and rebuilding. I have always been driven to better the world we live in. I think that is what the progressive movement is about.
