Carolina is originally from Uruguay, but has lived in several cities and countries. Currently, she is a senior at the University of Michigan majoring in International Relations and Human Rights, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. As a student, Carolina has been involved with Migrants and Immigrants Rights Awareness (MIRA), a student group that focuses on organizing community activities that create awareness of the needs and concerns of the immigrant community in the United States. The change she would like to see most is a fair and adequate immigration system that treats people humanely, with the dignity and respect they deserve.

"Being surrounded by genuinely passionate, driven individuals does great things for your spirit. It reminds you of why you are here and what role you play in something greater, bigger than yourself."

- Carolina Rizzo,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about creating positive social change through the legal system, the media and grassroots organizing.

You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
Because I've learned the most from people and not books, I'd leave the book behind and take some people with me, if that's okay.

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
I want to learn the logistics of grassroots organizing, fund-raising and coalition-building. But more importantly, I hope to maintain relationships -both personal and professional- with some of the amazing people involved in this program. Being surrounded by genuinely passionate, driven individuals does great things for your spirit. It reminds you of why you are here and what role you play in something greater, bigger than yourself.
