Age: 19

School: Swarthmore College

Interests: Feminism, anti-oppression work, organizing for social change, reading, progressive politics, building community, forming relationships

Internship: National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

Cecilia is from Arlington, VA and is a rising Sophomore at Swarthmore College. She helped form the Swarthmore Women of Color Collective and is currently a Multicultural Recruitment Intern for Swarthmore College. In this position, she helps to change the face of her campus to reflect more people of color, queer people, and people from working-class backgrounds. Cecilia is involved in a variety of organizations that raise awareness about issues effecting marginalized communities, such as the Swarthmore Queer Union, Colors (a student organization for queer people of color), and Enlace (the Latino/a student organization). In the future, Cecilia hopes to see the queer community be more actively engaged in conversations around queer people of color and empowering women of color in her campus community and beyond.

"I am most passionate about issues facing queer people of color and women of color because I think that they are two uniquely marginalized groups both of which I share my identity with."

- Cecilia Marquez,
2008 New Leaders Summer Intern
What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about issues facing queer people of color and women of color because I think that they are two uniquely marginalized groups both of which I share my identity with.

You're stranded on a deserted island. What is one book or album that you can't live without?
Feminism is For Everybody by bell hooks. This book totally changed my life and shifted my understanding of myself and the world around me.

What do you hope to take away from your experience as a CPL New Leader?
My father is Venezuelan, a first-generation American. My mother is White, and established for three generations in America. My father grew up in the working class and my mother was raised in the middle class. My parents both come from entirely heterosexual families and I am queer. Because I have experienced such variation of privilege and oppression, I want to be actively involved in erasing oppression. I believe progressive organizations are a vehicle for me to achieve this goal, either through exposing the oppression or offering opportunities to those who face oppression.
