2009 New Leaders Fellows

Michael Cooper

Michael Cooper

Hometown: North Wilkesboro, NC

Age: 22

Placement: Intern for Congressman Keith Ellison

"I am passionate about improving basic public education; especially in regards to the way civics and American history are taught. To me that is the root of so many problems. It amazes me how most people lack a vital understanding of the way our country works, our government works, the whole electoral process, or our history and how we got here."

Michael is passionate about improving basic public education in regards to the way that civics and American history are taught. He currently works as an intern with the Hip Hop Caucus. Previously, he has also interned for Democracy for America and in 2008 served as the Political Director for Roy Carter for Congress in North Carolina. Originally from North Wilkesboro, NC, he attended Appalachian State University and graduated with a BA in Journalism with a minor in Political Science. During that time he covered sports, music, local news, national politics, and the culture of hip-hop.

Michael is the first male on his father's side of the family to graduate from college. He believes that not understanding the way our country and our government works keeps this country from progressing forward and learning from the lessons of our past. Over the years he has worked as a journalist for newspapers, magazines and online print media.
