Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks

Hometown: Marrero, Louisiana

Age: 24

Placement: Staff Assistant for Rep. Jan Schakowsky

"I have dreamed of having a positive impact on progressive public policy since high school. My goal is to advise policy makers, involve community leaders, build coalitions among groups and encourage every-day people to push for policy that truly helps all families. "

Tyra is devoted to creating better opportunities for families and children. She is currently the Staff Assistant in the Office of Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Tyra began her career as a New Leaders Intern working at Campaign for America’s Future. After serving as their Conference Intern for merely 2 months, the organization offered her a full-time staff position. Tyra continued to attend the CPL trainings where she expanded her knowledge of the progressive movement and public policy. During her time at Campaign for America's Future, she gained crucial experience by working with other organizations such as the Apollo Alliance, Americans against Escalation in Iraq, Tompaine.com, and Progressive Majority.

With the support of the staff at Campaign for America's Future, Tyra moved on to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s office. Four months after being hired, Tyra was offered the opportunity to work on Foster Care legislation. Six months after taking on her first legislative issue, Tyra’s Legislative Director urged her to tackle Adoption legislation. On top of her office responsibilities, Tyra is an active member of Congressional Black Associates. In May, she will graduate from WeLead, a leadership program at the Women in Politics Institute at American University. Tyra is a proud graduate of the Midwest Academy Organizer Training Program. Before moving to Washington, DC, she lived in Louisiana where she worked as a disaster relief volunteer for America Speaks and Second Harvest Food Bank during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
